For those with limited mobility the bathroom can be a dangerous place. It is possible for senior citizens to slip and fall in the shower or tub, causing severe injury. Safety aids as simple as a shower stool will be of great help. In recent years and with the advent of new technology mobility aids have improved greatly benefiting the disabled and elderly. Developments include mobility scooters, stairlifts, adjustable beds, walk in baths and bath seats.

Not only do these types of products provide physical safety, but they also provide a peace of mind for the users, as well as their loved ones. Using a shower stool in the bathtub or shower lets the user sit down while they're bathing, so they don't have to worry about standing up and possibly slipping. I would recommend the kind with a backrest and armrests, as they provide support in standing up and sitting down. There are types with padded seats for those who need a softer surface. They have chair with cut out seats, so you can wash the undersides, and they have models that fold up when not in use. The seats are usually constructed of rust resistant material like aluminum, plastic, or stainless steel, and are generally quite lightweight.

You can then sit in the bath enjoying the experience without strain or undue effort, you can wash in privacy and generally take your time. All because of a shower stool in the tub or shower.

People sometimes have trouble getting up once they've sat down, so a toilet safety frame fits around or over the toilet and provides armrests so that the user can have something to support themselves with as they stand up or sit down. Raised toilet bath seats are also useful as they attach to the toilet seat so that the user does not have as far to stand up or sit down.

Grab bars are helpful for anyone, not just those who are elderly. For maximum safety grab bars should be installed in multiple locations around the bathroom, not just in the tub or shower. Installing grab bars does not have to detract from the look of a well designed bathroom, as these days they can be found in designer colors and finishes and can even be purchased to match a fancy new faucet.

Additional reinforcement in these wall areas will need to be provided to support the grab bars. The grab bars for the toilet need to be installed both behind the tank and to the side opposite the counter or on both sides where the toilet is enclosed.

The grab bars need to be installed at a height just above the tank. While we are on the subject of an enclosed toilet area, we need to be sure that the opening to the toilet area, or the door, is 36"and opens out of the enclosed area. You also need to allow space for 60" of turn around area.

If this is not practical, then you might want to reconsider enclosing the toilet. The grab bars in a roll-in shower, as well as the fold down seat, are usually installed by the manufacturer. In the case of a custom shower enclosure, refer to the manufacturer's instructions on placement height for the grab bars. The bath seat, whether built-in or a fold-down, must be of chair height.
